Snowshoeing just might be one of Canada’s oldest winter recreational activities but it is coming to the Kawartha Lakes and specifically Fenelon Falls as a new event this coming winter.

This past year, Wayne Jolly of Sweet Bottom Coffee along with David Robinson, VP of Snowshoe Canada, have teamed up to create the inaugural Kawartha Lakes Snowshoe Race, Sunday, February 5th, 2017 at Garnet Graham Park on Cameron Lake in Fenelon Falls, Ontario. The team is back and better than ever before, gearing up for next year’s race on February 3rd, 2018!

andrew-eric-alexanderThe purpose of this annual event is to provide an opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts to experience the winter months in the Kawartha Lakes region. This will help create enhanced tourism benefits and will pave the way for a winter festival in Fenelon Falls. Proceeds from the 2017 event went to support the Kawartha Komets Special Needs Hockey Program.

The 2017 event had the support of several community service groups, including the Province of Ontario – RTO8, the City of Kawartha Lakes, CKL Economic Development, Councillor Doug Elmslie, Kawartha Works Community Co-op, Kawartha Lakes Snowmobile Club, Cable Cable and Bruce’s Tackle.

Snowshoe Racing is one of the fastest growing winter sports in the cold weather countries in the world with many races being staged in Europe and the US each year.

The Fenelon event will be a race designed for all levels of participants from beginner to expert.

The distances will be 5k and 10k and there will be short sprint event for the children. A truly family event.

The event is fully sanctioned by Snowshoe Canada, the governing body for Snowshoe racing in Canada.
